Shirodhara is an ayurvedic treatment that has an immense impact on the nervous system. The name is derived from two terms ‘shiro’ meaning head and ‘dhara’ meaning pouring in a stream or flow. It has an immediate calming and relaxing effect on the mind and a cleansing effect on the nerves.

Shirodhara is a specialised Ayurvedic treatment designed specifically for this purpose, to nourish the head. Warm oil is poured in a continuous stream over the 3rd eye or Ajna Marma, an area where nerves are highly concentrated. The pressure of the oil onto the forehead creates a vibration, as the oil saturates the forehead and scalp and penetrates into the nervous system allowing you to surrender into a deep state of relaxation and freedom from sensory overload. The forehead is home to some of the main endocrine or master glands such as the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus, the brain in control of these glands – essentially our body’s control station. When we take care of the control station, the entire body functions smoothly. It has a purifying and rejuvenating effect that eliminates toxins and mental exhaustion and any ill effects on the central nervous system, combating imbalances such as stress, insomnia anxiety and depression.
