Acupuncture treats the whole person, body and mind

What is Acupuncture?

Within the Westoe Practice, the Acupuncturist uses the ancient technique of healing which involves inserting fine needles into key points situated along specific energy pathways (meridians) all over the body to encourage natural healing, reduce or relieve pain and improve functioning of the body.

Based on the principles of Traditional Chinese medicine, Acupuncture has been practiced in China and other Eastern countries for over 2000 years.

The Acupuncturist at the Westoe Practice will use needles which are disposable and very fine. The patient will sometimes feel a slight tingling sensation when the needles are inserted. Various methods of manipulating needles are used which can create subtle sensations.

Generally speaking, Acupuncture should not be painful. You may feel a dull ache, perhaps a feeling of electricity or tingling, a sensation of heat or cold, or it may just feel strange. At no time, though, should you have any sensation that is beyond your tolerance level. The Acupuncturist at the Westoe Practice finds the vast majority of clients report that, after a while, they begin to feel a real sense of wellbeing.

The short answer is no. A word of caution though. You may find your medication working more efficiently since Acupuncture has a tendency to remove blockages and balance the energetic pathways. If your medication is dosage sensitive, ensure you see your Doctor to monitor your dosages. It is never a good idea to stop taking medication without your Doctor’s guidance. Western pharmaceuticals are potent. In many cases you need to reduce dosages gradually to avoid unpleasant reactions. Always liase with your GP.
