Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage

The lymphatic system plays a key role in the body’s overall health

What is Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Lymphatic massage, sometimes called manual lymphatic drainage, is a specialized type of massage. It used light pressure and specific movements to improve the flow of lymph fluid, which should reduce swelling, improve circulation, encourage decongestion, help improve skin appearance, as well as increase overall wellbeing.

How does it work?

The fluid in the lymphatic system helps remove waste and toxins from body tissues. Some health conditions and general day to day life can cause lymph fluid to build up. Lymphatic drainage massages can benefit everyone but those with lymphedema, fibromyalgia, or those who have recently undergone surgery similar should feel significant improvements.

Lymphatic fluid flows through lymph vessels, which connect lymph nodes. As it passes through the lymph nodes, white blood cells trap and destroy harmful particles, such as bacteria.

Like blood in the circulatory system, lymphatic fluid is always moving. If it stops, swelling can occur, as lymph fluid builds up, often in the arms or legs. Health experts call this lymphedema.

Lymphatic massage can form part of a treatment program health experts call decongestive lymphatic therapy.

A Typical Session

Your first session will begin with a short but thorough consultation so the therapist can gain an understanding of your overall health and any concerns you may have.

During the session the therapist with use various light, deliberate movements in certain areas to encourage the movement of the lymph and stimulate your bodies natural response.

The gentle motions employed by the therapist are very calming and relaxing helping you feel at peace. Some clients have reported they almost fell asleep!

Clients are encouraged to return for regular appointments to maximise the beneficial effects of the therapy.
