Combine the healing properties of essential oils and indulge in a relaxing massage
What is Aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is the practice of using the natural oils extracted from flowers, bark, stems, leaves, roots or other parts of a plant to enhance psychological and physical wellbeing.
The inhaled aroma from these “essential” oils is widely believed to stimulate brain function. Essential oils can also be absorbed through the skin, where they travel through the bloodstream and can promote whole-body healing.
An Aromatherapy treatment at the Westoe Practice offers a wonderful opportunity to combine the healing properties of essential oils and indulge in a relaxing massage.

How does it work?
Aromatherapy is the ancient science of healing, relaxing and energizing by the use of pure essential oils that have been extracted from herbs, flowers, fruits and trees. The Therapist will choose specific essential oil blends for their own therapeutic characteristics and actions. When essential oils are inhaled or applied to the skin, messages are transmitted to the limbic system and affect heart rate, stress level, blood pressure, breathing, memory, digestion, and the immune system.
Our Therapist will use gentle massage to apply the oil blend, which is carefully selected to suit individual needs. Sometimes premixed synergised blends can be used to help maximise effectiveness. Each essential oil blend has different properties. For example, some calm while others energize. Here are some widely used essential oils and their properties:
How can Aromatherapy Massage help you?
Imbalances within the body create the underlying causes of ill health. Restoring balance places the body back to the optimum condition to heal and recover.
Aromatherapy does not claim to diagnose or cure. As of yet it is not scientifically proven to be evidence based and as a result current legislation prohibits us from listing symptoms and conditions that are known to respond well when we follow the well-established principle of naturopathic medicine: ‘That the body be treated as a whole, without referral to named disease’.
A Typical session
An initial Aromatherapy session at the Westoe Practice, South Shields will take approximately 1 hr. This will involve an in-depth consultation taking time to understand any symptoms, medical history and lifestyle.
Based on this consultation, the therapist will then decide which essential oil blend is most suited to your individual needs and use this during the session.
On subsequent appointments you will be given the choice of a full body or back massage. An Aromatherapy back massage will take 45 mins and includes the neck and shoulders. The subtle aroma of the essential oils fills the air around you during the massage.
Clients are encouraged to return regularly to maximise benefits of the treatment and to give themselves the time needed to destress and relax.
Aromatherapy is the use of natural essential oils extracted from plants in enhancing physical and psychological well-being. Essential oils are the life force and strength of the plant from which they are derived, and just like protecting the plant, these extracts can protect our bodies. Inhalation of the oils is a powerful delivery method to reach the brain, and it results in instantaneous therapeutic effects. Essential oils can also be absorbed through the skin, the body’s largest organ, where they can enter the bloodstream to promote faster healing.
Essential Oils are produced by extracting various oils and resins from plant material such as flowers, leaves, roots, bark, fruit, berries, peels and stems.
