Aromatherapy
Combine the healing properties of essential oils and indulge in a relaxing massage
What is Aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is the practice of using the natural oils extracted from flowers, bark, stems, leaves, roots or other parts of a plant to enhance psychological and physical wellbeing.
The inhaled aroma from these “essential” oils is widely believed to stimulate brain function. Essential oils can also be absorbed through the skin, where they travel through the bloodstream and can promote whole-body healing.
An Aromatherapy treatment at the Westoe Practice offers a wonderful opportunity to combine the healing properties of essential oils and indulge in a relaxing massage.

How does it work?
Aromatherapy is the ancient science of healing, relaxing and energizing by the use of pure essential oils that have been extracted from herbs, flowers, fruits and trees. The Aromatherapist at the Westoe Practice, South Shields will choose specific essential oils for their own therapeutic characteristics and actions. When essential oils are inhaled, messages are transmitted to the limbic system and affect heart rate, stress level, blood pressure, breathing, memory, digestion, and the immune system.
Our Aromatherapist at the Westoe Practice, South Shields will use gentle massage to apply the oils, which are carefully selected and blended to suit individual needs. Each essential oil has different healing properties. For example, some calm while others energize. Here are some widely used essential oils and their properties:
- Calming - chamomile, lavender, geranium
- Uplifting - ylang ylang, clary sage, rose, neroli
- Energizing - rosemary
- Cleansing - rosemary
- Decongesting - eucalyptus, pine, tea tree
How can Aromatherapy Massage help you?
Imbalances within the body create the underlying causes of ill health. Restoring balance places the body back to the optimum condition to heal and recover.
Aromatherapy does not claim to diagnose or cure. As of yet it is not scientifically proven to be evidence based and as a result current legislation prohibits us from listing symptoms and conditions that are known to respond well when we follow the well-established principle of naturopathic medicine: ‘That the body be treated as a whole, without referral to named disease’.
A Typical session
An initial Aromatherapy session at the Westoe Practice, South Shields will take approximately 1 hr 15 mins. This will involve an in-depth consultation taking time to understand any symptoms, medical history and lifestyle.
The Aromatherapist will then decide which essential oils are most suited to your individual needs and make up a blend mixed with massage oil or lotion.
Typically the massage will take 1 hr. On subsequent appointments you will be given the choice of a full body or back massage. An Aromatherapy back massage will take between 30 and 45 mins and includes the neck and shoulders. The subtle aroma of the essential oils fills the air around you during the massage.
Two or three treatments are often sufficient to achieve lasting relief from many conditions, although further treatments may sometimes be required. Clients are encouraged to return occasionally for maintenance treatments.
FAQs
Aromatherapy is the use of natural essential oils extracted from plants in enhancing physical and psychological well-being. Essential oils are the life force and strength of the plant from which they are derived, and just like protecting the plant, these extracts can protect our bodies. Inhalation of the oils is a powerful delivery method to reach the brain, and it results in instantaneous therapeutic effects. Essential oils can also be absorbed through the skin, the body’s largest organ, where they can enter the bloodstream to promote faster healing.
Essential Oils are produced by extracting various oils and resins from plant material such as flowers, leaves, roots, bark, fruit, berries, peels and stems.
